Meaning: “I awake”
Pronunciation: ZHANE-go or JANG-oh
Origin: Roma (Gypsy)
Other forms of the name: Possibly Jean
The name Django is something I recently discovered after hearing about Quentin Tarantino’s new movie “Django Unchained”. Some say that the name Django is a Roma form of the name Jean which is further proven in the case of Django Reinhardt, a famous jazz musician who was born Jean Baptiste in Belgium, 1910. He invented a new style of jazz that has become a tradition in the French Romani culture.
“Django Unchained” which is set to come out next year, tells the story of Django, a recently set free slave who turns into a bounty hunter and tries to save his wife from his former owner.
I don’t see why this name isn’t more popular, it’s truly lovely and it has a great musician to associate it with! Hopefully the movie will give it a little more recognition.
