Plato was one of the most important Greek philosophers, he was the teacher to Aristotle (who taught Alexander the Great) and the student to Socrates. He was born Aristocles after his grandfather but was nicknamed Platon by his wrestling coach because of his broad figure. He then starting using the name Plato. Some people argue that he was named Aristocles but it has not been proven to be false or otherwise. Plato was quick-witted and loved to study, he was schooled in gymnastics, grammar, and music by the best teachers. When he was forty years old he founded one of the oldest Western schools in the world. Plato’s teachings have been used to teach many subjects such as mathematics, logic, ethics, rhetoric, and philosophy. There have been two Saint Plato’s, one being a very admirable man, he freed his slaves and gave all his money to his sisters and the poor.
