Meaning: “Raspberry”
Gender: Female
Pronunciation: ay-VAN-nun
Origin: Welsh
Other forms of the name: N/A

This is a fairly recent Welsh appellation that I think is just stunning. Legend states that raspberries were originally white in color. The nymph Ida who was Jupiter’s (or Zeus’) nursemaid was picking raspberries for the very agitated baby God and she pricked her finger causing the berries to stain red from her blood. The raspberry’s Latin name is Rubus idaeus meaning “Belonging to Ida”.

In Hellenistic Troy, raspberries were tied to fertility and children; some of the Natives of America used them to soothe labor pains. In Germany tying a bit of raspberry cane to a supposedly bewitched horse tamed it. Raspberries are considered feminine plants and are governed by Venus.
